Spyderco Sprint Run JD Smith Folder
Spyderco likes to release a lot of creative designs. They are a group of creative souls! They will produce items in “sprint runs” of 1200 pieces and just sell through them. They may re-release the item but they may not. They may make a few changes in materials or design the next time. This keeps Spyderco enthusiasts on their toes for the models they may want to use or collect. The JD Smith was a short lived models years ago (2002?) with a highly polished blade and Micarta handles. This new edition is very similar in many ways- the design is the same, but the handle is now G10 instead of the Micarta. The blade is still VG10, but it is less polished and is flat ground instead of hollow ground. This is a great folder and the manufacturing details are similar to the Spyderco Barong and folding Kukri.
Here is the description from Spyderco:
J.D. Smith is a longstanding member of the Knifemakers’ Guild and an ABS Mastersmith. In the 90s he designed and made a tactical-style folder for his own personal use, crafted using advanced materials yet also managing to delight the eye. His design eventually developed into the Spyderco SP58 J.D. Smith CLIPIT and new for 2009, Spyderco is re-releasing a Sprint Run (limited in number) with a foliage green G-10 handle.
One unique feature of the design is the Spyderco Trademark Round Hole™ strategically positioned on the Flat Ground VG-10 blade so there is no pronounced hump. This gives the folder an aesthetic, streamlined shape starting from the blade’s tip to the end of the handle. Blade length is 3-13/16” (97mm) and comes only in a PlainEdge™ configuration. In keeping with J.D.’s style and preference for quality materials, the handle is foliage green G-10 and flares slightly where it joins to the handle creating a finger choil and guard. 4-way ambidextrous steel clip.
